Place Name
The name is thought to be a corruption of Gwydyr, after Peter Burrell, 1st Baron Gwydyr, (June 16, 1754 – June 29, 1820) of Langley House. The Burrells owned large tracts of land around Beckenham. Peter is best known for being a founder member of Marylebone Cricket Club in 1787. In 1779, he married Lady Priscilla Barbara Elizabeth Bertie, the daughter of Peregrine Bertie, 3rd Duke of Ancaster.
