Ethelbert Road, BR1

Place Name

Named after the Anglo-Saxon Ethelbert (Æthelberht), who was King of Mercia from AD 675 until AD 704. In AD 676, a year after being crowned, Ethelbert invaded Kent, where his armies destroyed the city of Rochester, so impoverishing the region that the bishop retired, as did his predecessor. Perhaps in penance, Ethelbert, who was known as a pious and devout Christian king, gave the manor of Bromley to the Bishops of Rochester in the 8th Century.
