Eden Way, BR3

Place Name

Named after William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland (April 3, 1745 – May 28, 1814) who retired to Beckenham after serving as a diplomat and MP between 1774 to 1793. The subantarctic Auckland Islands group to the south of New Zealand, which were discovered in 1806, are also named after him. During his time in Beckenham, William continued a friendship with William Pitt the Younger, the former Prime Minister, and his nearest neighbour at Holwood House, who at one time had thoughts of marrying his daughter. Eden Park, his mansion, stood on the present site of Crease Park.
