Place Name
The village of Downe was first recorded in 1296 during the reign of Edward I. It is situated on the northern edge of the North Downs, which take their name from the Anglo-Saxon word dūn, meaning the hills. It was featured again in the records of 1316. By the time Charles Darwin moved to the village in 1846 it was spelt Down but later became Downe. Directional.
