Place Name

The Bishops of Rochester had a residence in the area from the 12th Century up until 1845, on land that was originally given to them in the 8th Century by Ethelbert, King of Kent. The residence, which was built at the time of Bishop Gualeranus, or Walleran, was officially called Bromley Palace but became known as the Bishop’s Palace and today is part of the Civic Centre.
