Place Name
Named after John Lubbock, 1st Baron Avebury, (April 30, 1834 – May 28, 1913) a banker, Liberal politician, philanthropist, scientist and polymath. He was also from 1890 to 1892 chairman of the London County Council. He was brought up in the family home of High Elms Estate, near Downe. Among his very many other claims to fame he assisted Darwin’s research; was president of the Linnean Society of London; a trustee of the British Museum; and a member of the American Antiquarian Society. In 1900, he was raised to the peerage as Baron Avebury, of Avebury, in the county of Wiltshire, his title commemorating the Stone Age site, which he had helped to preserve, having purchased it in 1871 when the site was threatened with destruction.
