Burgos Close, CR0

Place Name

Named after long-serving Labour councillor Vit Burgos who served in the Waddon ward throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Among his crusades, were highlighting concerns about the flyover and cuts to welfare grants, securing the closure of the much-criticised Walmer House homelessness centre and the building of quality council homes.

This article was corrected thanks to new information. It previously read: Named after the Spanish city that was held by the French during the Peninsular War. The British, Portuguese and Spanish forces under the command of Lieutenant General the Earl of Wellington, besieged the citadel but failed to break the French defence between September 19 and October 25, 1812. As French troops came to relieve the city, Wellington, realising that his men were heavily outnumbered, made a rare withdrawal.

  1. There is also a Burgos Grove SE10 which has an historic building ‘Wellington House’ at No2. Perhaps there is some connection with Wellington, the battle and facts have become confused ?

  2. Hello Cllr Prince, thank you so much. We knew this may happen. Do you know when the road was named? And any more details of Cllr Burgos.
