Place Name

The name comes form the Old English words sceald and wella meaning a shallow springs or well, which gave the area its name, it was first mentioned in the records as Schadewelle in AD1222. By the following year it was spelt Shadewell and then mutating over the next century as Scaldenwell in AD1314 and Shaldewell in AD1316. The area remained fairly rural until the mid-17thCentury when industry began to arrive.
