Place Name

Comes from the Old English words sceald and wella meaning a shallow spring or well, which gave the area its name, it was first mentioned in the records as Schadewelle in 1222. By the following year it was spelt Shadewell and then mutating over the next century as Scaldenwell in 1314 and Shaldewell in 1316. The area remained fairly rural until the mid-17thCentury when industry began to arrive.
