Rood Lane, EC3M

Place Name

Named after the rood – or holy cross – set up in the churchyard at St Margaret Pattens while it was being rebuilt in the early 16thCentury. It became an object of veneration and offering, which helped pay for the repair of the church, but was torn down in 1538 by protestants who saw it as an object of excessive superstition.
