Named after John Olyffe, an Alderman of London, who held the Manor of East Wickham during Elizabeth I’s reign. When he died in AD1577 the manor was then passed through the marriage of his only heir and daughter to John Leigh, Esq. of Addington. The family held on to the manor for the next 160 years until the death of Sir John Leigh, in AD1737.
