Place Name

Named after the East Sussex village of Newick, near Haywards Heath, which had connections with the Powell family, Hackney landowners from at least the mid-18thCentury. The Reverend Baden Powell of Newick, was born in Stamford Hill in 1796. And in 1840 he gave land known as the Strawberry Gardens as the site for St James’s Church of which another member of the Powell family became vicar.
