Montague Street, EC1A

Place Name

An English corruption of Ralph Montagu (December 24, 1638 – March 9, 1709) who owned a mansion here. He was made Master of the Horse to Queen Catherine, wife of Charles II, after his elder brother, Edward, was dismissed from the position by the king for “showing attention to the queen of too ardent a nature”. By contrast he acquired a reputation for gallantry and he took an active part in the negotiations in which Louis XIV purchased the neutrality of England in the war between France and the Netherlands.
