Place Name
Previously Monkwell Street, with parts of Silver Street and Fell Street. It was variously recorded as Mukewellestrate in the 12thCentury, Mogwellestrate in the 13thCentury, Mugwelstrete in the 16thCentury before, in 1603, becoming Munkeswell streete. It is thought to refer to a family called de Mukewell, who themselves got the name from a well owned by a man called Muca or Mucca.
