McEntee Avenue, E17

Place Name

Named after a former West Walthamstow constituency Labour MP, the rather splendidly named, Valentine la Touche McEntee (January 16, 1871 – February 11, 1953). In 1920 McEntee became a local councillor in Walthamstow and went on to become MP for Walthamstow West from 1922 to 1924 and again from 1929 to 1950. He was also Mayor of Walthamstow from 1929 to 1930 and 1951 to 1952. He was made a baron in 1950 so that the then Prime Minister Clement Attlee, could take his safe seat when his own seat of Limehouse was abolished in constituency reforms. This street was laid out over the former Bull’s Farm.
