Market Square, BR1

Place Name

In AD1447 or AD1448, King Henry VI granted the Bishop of Rochester the right to hold a weekly Thursday market and two annual fairs in the Charter Roll 25 and 26. This appears to have been an amendment to a much earlier market that was granted by King John from in AD1205 who allowed  Bishop Granville, the right to hold a market  every Tuesday throughout the year.  The fairs at Bromley were, with the market and market house, let on lease by the Bishops, the last lease expired in AD1862.
