Place Name

Named after John Manship (1726 – 1816), a businessman in the City of London and local landowner, who was a director of the East India Company for over 50 years. He inherited the manor of Biggin and Tamworth in the parish of Mitcham on the death of his father, the publisher Samuel Manship, in 1749.
