Little Ilford Lane, E12

Place Name

Directional. Taken from the hamlet of Little Ilford, which although still exists, is now better known as Manor Park, on account of the nearby train station. Little Ilford was the smallest parish in Becontree hundred and until the major development of the area in the 19thCentury was sparsely populated. Like its larger neighbour the name Ilford means the ford through the River Hyle, which itself meant a trickle. Today the Hyle is the River Roding. During the 13thCentury the area which was originally just plain Ilford began to be called Little Ilford, to distinguish it from the growing settlement of Great Ilford, east of the river.
