Gilbert Road, BR1

Place Name

Named after the family of Gilbert de Helles, a landowner in Sundridge. In 1227, de Helles leased land to Adam le Blund who agreed to pay “ten solidates of rent with the appurtenances at Sundresse,” a solidus being Medieval Latin for a shilling for the right to use the land. The document goes on to agree that le Blund and his heirs would pay de Helles and his heirs five shillings sterling for one Ing (meadow) of land.
