First mentioned in 1316 as Fynamoureslane most likely after the owner’s surname. By the 17thCentury however it was variously recorded as Five Foot lane, which was said to be after the original breadth of the road, the current spelling is a corruption of that. Other spellings have included Finamour Lane, Fyford lane and Five foot court.
