Fremantle Road, DA17

Place Name

Believed to be named in honour of Admiral Sir Charles Howe Fremantle (June 1, 1800 – May 25, 1869), a Royal Navy officer. Fremantle was the son of Admiral Thomas Fremantle, a close associate of Nelson, and also gives his name to the city of Fremantle in Western Australia. Several streets around Belvedere are named after major naval figures, including Nelson himself. Probably because Belvedere was the location of the old Seamen’s Home, which was established as a charity in 1865 to help “worn out and infirm seamen”.
