Degema Road, BR7

Place Name

Named after the river port of Degema in southern Nigeria, the road was developed by Harry Miller (born 1884), a builder who had made his fortune there before returning to the UK. According to one former resident Miller “was very choosy about who he sold or rented his houses to”. “His preference was policemen (hence the nickname Coppers Alley), ex soldiers with the minimum rank of warrant officer and civil servants.”
