Named after the former owner of Heathfield Lodge, Samuel Norman Cowley who was a successful cloth and linen merchant, whose business Cowley and Hewetson Cowley ran from 31 Gresham Street, in the City of London. When his partner died in AD 1825 he formed a new partnership Cowley and Sancton from AD1825 – AD1834 before he became a Master of The Worshipful Company of Clothworkers in AD1835.
