Chelsfield Road, BR5

Place Name

Directional. The name Chelsfield was first recorded, spelt Chilesfield, in the Domesday survey of 1086. It probably means the field owned by Cëol, a Saxon landowner who may also have owned land in Rainham. An alternative suggestion is that it means the field on the rounded hill. The settlement where this road leads to is dated from around the 13thCentury.
