Camden Road, DA5

Place Name

Named after William Camden (May 2, 1551 – November 9, 1623) an antiquarian, historian, topographer, and herald, best known as the author of Britannia, the first chorographical survey of the islands of Great Britain and Ireland, and the Annales, the first detailed historical account of the reign of Elizabeth I. Although he lived in Chislehurst he owned a great deal of land in Bexleyheath. When he died he left the manor of Bexley to Oxford University, which used the revenue to fund a professorship of history.
