Burdett Close, DA14

Place Name

Most likely named after Sir Francis Burdett (January 25, 1770 – January 23, 1844), a reformist MP who in 1794 became tenant of Vale Mascal following his travels in Switzerland and France, during the French Revolution. He married Sophie Coutts, the second daughter of the wealthy banker Thomas Coutts. In Parliament he became prominent as an opponent of William Pitt the Younger, and as an advocate of popular rights.
