Place Name

The name comes from the Old English word borg-steall meaning a place of refuge, which was usually in relation to cattle. It was first recorded as Borstall in AD1254 and a century later Burstalle. The word survives in the Sussex and Kent dialect word borstal which means a path up a steep slope.
