Barley Mow Passage, EC1A

Place Name

There was a Barley Mow Tavern based at 50 Long Lane for more than 200 years, the first records coming in 1789. It closed down in 2006. The name of the pub has two possible references, the first a nod to the cereals that make beer or, and far more likely, it was a knowing corruption of the nearby St Bartholomew’s church and hospital.
