Previously Baltic Street. This street and others located nearby were built by a timber merchant Thomas Hacker who in 1808 named them after trade-related activities, they were laid out the following year. The Baltic here refers to the Baltic softwood trade that developed in the 17th and 18th Centuries. Other streets in the cluster include Domingo Street, Mimel Street, Timber Street, Sycamore Street, Honduras Street and Baltic Street West.
