Place name

Recalling John of Strathbogie (c. 1266 – November 7, 1306), the 9th Earl of Atholl who was Lord of the Manor of Lesness at the time of Edward I. He was a great-great-grandson of King John. Although Scottish he gained his lands around Erith through marriage but subsequently forfeited them after joining forces with Robert the Bruce in his rebellion against the English overlords in 1306. That year he was taken prisoner at the Battle of Methven. For his treachery against the English monarch he was hanged at Middlesex, on a gallows 30 feet higher than ordinary, as a mark of his status.
