Named after Daniel Asher Alexander (May 6, 1768 – March 2, 1846) architect and surveyor of the London Dock, which was completed in AD1805, having been granted a 21 year monopoly in handling tobacco, rice, wine and brandy. He had previously been the principal architect of Dartmoor Prison and Maidstone Prison. From AD1796 until AD1831 he was surveyor to the London Dock Company responsible for all the buildings at the London Docks, including the Pennington Street Warehouses and the London Dock House.
