Place Name
Built between 1768 and 1774, shortly before the signing of the America treaty of independence, it was laid out by George Dance the Younger for middle-class merchants and sea captains. Although the name’s origin is unknown it is thought to be after the merchants who traded with the American colonies who had their quarters here.
