Alers Road, DA6

Place Name

Named after Jameson Alers Hankey (September 13, 1836 – October 23, 1917), a descendant of the Hankey banking family. He moved to The Mount, Upton, Bexley, in 1874 with his wife Minna Louisa and their nine children. Minna was the daughter of Humphrey Lyons of the Bombay Army, who Hankey had met while a civil servant in India. The couple had four more children while living at the property. Hankey acquired the surrounding land to consolidate his own estate; he let The Mount to the Bristow family, who were living there by 1891. The housing development on the property may have begun around 1899. When he died, Minna gave her address as The Mount when she made her will in 1922, although she normally lived in Eastbourne. She died four years later and The Mount was demolished in August 1927. The site is at Fairway, overlooking Bexleyheath Golf Club.
